4 Ways to Make Your Apartment More Cozy This Winter
New Englanders know a thing or two about surviving the winter months. We’ve got our L.L Bean boots, our best fleeces and a hot cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee to get us through the day! No matter how cold or windy it is, we are always ready to suit up and head on out. But just because we are brave enough to face the winter outside our apartments that doesn’t mean we want to bring winter back inside. So bring it on polar vortex! Here are four ways you can make your apartment cozier this winter:
1. Get a new colorful comforter.
A heavy winter comforter lets you turn down the thermostat a few degrees (saving you on energy costs) without sacrificing a warm night’s sleep. If you’re looking to buy a new comforter this winter consider getting one in a fun color like red, purple, green or even a fun polka-dotted or stripped pattern. Those vibrant colors can help brighten up your bedroom on a cold and dreary day. If you want to add even a little more pizzazz (and still stay warm) invest in a set of flannel sheets in a complimentary color/pattern and a throw or two.
2. Opt for energy efficient lights.
One of the worst things about New England in the winter is that it’s pitch black by five o’clock! Even with the great views and fantastic natural light our apartments have during the day, once the sun is gone you’re relying on artificial light. You can create a warmer atmosphere in your apartment AND keep your electric bill down by choosing high efficiency, dimmable LED bulbs in a warmer tone. Consider adding a few side-table lamps next to your favorite reading spots so you can cut down on the amount of time you have to turn all the lights on.
3. Hang heavier curtains.
Ever notice how your window pane is always cold to touch during the winter? Heavier curtains can be drawn at night (or during a snowstorm!) to provide an extra layer of insulation between your apartment and the cold outdoors. Drawn back during the day they don’t interfere with natural light, but at night they can help insulate those big window panes and keep any drafts to a minimum all winter long!
4. Make your bathroom your happy place.
In Iceland, they actually warm the floors in the all the hotel bathrooms so your toes don’t freeze when they hit the tiles. While that may not be possible for your apartment, there are a few ways you can make your bathroom extra cozy this winter. Number one, get soap or body wash in your favorite winter flavors, like peppermint. Peppermint is especially good when you have a cold because it can help open your stuffed nose! Number two, get a thick bathmat in a fun color to protect your toes from the cold tile. And if you don’t have a dryer in your apartment, consider investing in a towel warmer for your bathroom. They can be a little expensive (a good Christmas gift to hint at then!), but it’s really a luxury worth indulging in. A warm towel right out of the shower? Yes, please!
