The Best Places to Go for a Run in Boston
Running is a popular pastime in Boston and those who are passionate about the sport tend to pursue it no matter what the conditions outside are. In fact, running is something that people enjoy even in the winter. One of the reasons for this is that there are a lot of great places to go for a run in the city. Here’s some information about where you can run in Boston, any time of year:
Freedom Trail Run
The Freedom Trail is conveniently located just outside the Devonshire Apartments since some of the key stops are nearby. For example, the site of the Boston Massacre is about one minute away from the apartments. The purpose of this trail is to lead people to all the key historical sites in the city. Instead of walking the trail, avid runners list the Freedom Trail as one of their favorite routes. This enables people to not only get a great workout, but to also catch a glimpse at the historical sites.
Although it’s officially called the Charles River Bike Path, this is a popular trail that runners also enjoy. This is one of the easiest running paths to access in the city, and it is also one of the longest. If you start your loop at the Museum of Science and end it at Watertown Square, you would have run almost eighteen miles. The path is also well maintained and incredibly scenic since you will have a viewpoint of the Boston skyline. Consider starting your run at the Esplanade. It is about a fifteen-minute jog to the Esplanade from the Devonshire Apartments, so this is a good route for some of your longer runs.
The Emerald Necklace
The Boston Athletic Association’s half marathon takes place each year. In addition to being presented by the Dana Faber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund, the event is also designed to draw attention to the Emerald Necklace park system. The trail for the half marathon both begins and ends at White Stadium in Boston’s Franklin Park. However, you don’t need to be registered for the race to run here. You can run in Franklin Park during any time of the year. In its entirety, this route will take you through six of Boston’s beautiful parks: Franklin Park, Jamaica Pond, the Arnold Arboretum, Olmsted Park, the Riverway, and the Back Bay Fens.
Located in the North End, the Boston Harborwalk is also a good place to go for a run. All told, the Harborwalk is made up of around 43 miles of trails. It goes from the Neponset River in Dorchester and to Constitution Beach in East Boston. The walk also goes through the North End. Catching the walk here is a convenient choice from the Devonshire Apartments. It is also a series of trails that connects to other areas that are good for running, such as the Rose Kennedy Greenway and the Freedom Trail.
You can’t go wrong with any of these popular running routes. If you decide to run during the colder months, a route such as the Freedom Trail might be the easiest since snow is usually cleaned from the sidewalks.
