Raising a Family in Downtown Boston
Just about everyone is familiar with the saying, “it takes a village to raise a child.” And for those parents raising their children in downtown Boston we have to say you’re doing so in the best village in the world! (Yes, we at the Devonshire are a little biased). Starting or raising a family in any city, town, or suburb is always going to be full of unique challenges, but you are also going to be given tons of wonderful opportunities as well simply because of the community your children are growing up in! If you, like many of the Devonshire residents, are raising a young family in downtown Boston here are a few of those wonderful opportunities for you to take advantage of!
Shark & Ray Touch Tank at New England Aquarium
Any hands-on activity is bound to be something your kids will love, and most kids would absolutely go giddy at the chance to touch a sea creature! The Trust Family Foundation Shark and Ray Touch Tank
feature sharks and rays in a 25,000-gallon tank surrounded by shallow edges and viewing windows. Visitors can touch cownose rays, Atlantic rays and epaulette sharks as they swim! The New England Aquarium is just an easy 10 minute walk from the Devonshire.
Boston Harbor Islands
Ferries to the Boston Harbor Islands leave from right by the New England Aquarium, and are a great way to spend a hot summer day! You and your family can explore historic sites, watch wildlife, hike, kayak, picnic, fish, swim, camp, and much more. There are even a few islands that let your camp out overnight. The Boston Harbor Islands have special events going on year round, even in the winter, so be sure to check out their calendar
Take Center Stage
The Devonshire is just a few blocks away from Boston’s Theater District, but tickets to shows and plays can get very expensive very quickly, especially if your child loves the theater! But if your son or daughter loves going to shows why not sign them up for a show of their own? offers classes and workshops for children of all ages, and can also host your next birthday party! The Wheelock Family Theater
also offers acting and musical theater classes for children as young as 6.
Cold and rainy days normally mean being cooped up indoors, right? Now when you live in downtown Boston! Sky Zone Boston
is an indoor trampoline park that has activities for every member of your family from toddlers to teens. Trampoline dodgeball, trampoline basketball, trampoline aerobics, and general bouncing around (even the walls are trampolines). If your kids can’t sit still for one more rainy day than Skyzone is a great way to get them up and moving around!
Mommy and Me Classes at Devonshire
Although our pool in the Sky Club is adults only, the Devonshire does offer mommy and me swim classes several times a month. Check with the front desk in the Sky Club for our next mommy and me pool time.
